Leash training a Pit Bull puppy

Leash training any puppy is a difficult process let alone a Pit Bull. You have to be patient for tying the collar and leash and making your pet to get used to it.

Leash training a Pit Bull puppy can be a frustrating task. Your puppy certainly does not want to be pulled or pushed towards traffic or other dogs. Moreover, on your part, do not think that simply pulling the leash is what you need to do. You need to know some leash manners to ensure the safety of your pet while walking.

Putting a collar is a vital task and be prepared for some hard resistance. No one wants to get tied on the neck, but you have to do it. Make sure you are doing it securely and not in a hurried way. It should not be so tight that your puppy finds it hard to breathe. It will get used to it, but once you tie the collar, you have to distract your pet from thinking about it. Give it some treat or involve in some games.

Attaching a leash to the collar..

When your puppy is fine with the collar and got used to it, it is the time to attach leash. It is for sure that your puppy will run with the leash and drag you behind. Do not hold the leash too tight and allow your pet to run easily. After a few minutes, take off the leash and repeat the process again. However, keep increasing the duration of keeping the leash on by a few minutes.

How to put the leash on..

Do not expect that you will get close to your pet with the leash and put it easily. Be prepared for some resistance. It is better that you put the leash just before your pet eats or place the leash beside the bowl of food before you attach it.

After tying..

After tying the leash, when you think that your pet is comfortable, you need to pick up the leash-end and follow your pet inside the house. You can also move around the areas where your puppy is comfortable. Remember, that this is the training period so it is better that you stay inside your house or a comfortable area and do not apply pressure to the collar or else the puppy will get scared. Keep praising your puppy and provide reward in regular intervals. This will help your pet to become comfortable with the leash in the way of playing and gradually you will be able to take it outside the house and move around comfortably with perfect control.

To make Leash training any puppy easier attach a collar on him or her starting at 8 weeks old and slowly adjust it as they grow into it. This method will allow them to get used to having something on their neck and it makes leash training a whole lot easier. You should also pull on the collar now and then so they will get used to having a leash pull on it later on. Notice the string on my baby girls neck below, leash training her was a piece of cake.
