Pitbull Puppy Training - Simple Tips For Creating the Perfect Family Pet

For the longest time I put off Pitbull puppy training. I don't know, maybe I thought that "Rocco", our Pitbull puppy, would train himself. At first I was clueless about training any kind of puppy.. However, my wife Laura and I followed the advice of a Pitbull handler, and followed these training tips.

Pitbulls, in general, have TONS of energy! Consequently, it is important that they get plenty of exercise. Make sure that before you bring a Pitbull into your life, that you are able to provide adequate channels for your puppy to release energy. It is sad to see Pitbull owners who keep their puppies tied up or in a confined area. It is very difficult for Pitbull puppy training to be successful with a hyperactive dog.

In fact, whenever it is possible, obtaining a 2nd puppy can accomplish two important objectives. The 2nd puppy can provide a playmate for your Pitbull, which will allow your puppy an outlet for energy. Also, interacting with another dog is a great way for your Pitbull puppy to get used to being around other dogs.

Pitbulls have the reputation for being aggressive toward other dogs. Consequently, your Pitbull puppy training should include introducing your puppy to other dogs at a very early age. Allowing your puppy to be around small children is good training as well. Introducing them to as many new social situations as possible is a great way create a "sociable" pitbull!

Pitbulls are quite intelligent, and training can begin at a very young age. Generally speaking, one word commands such as "down" and "No", can begin as early as 9-10 weeks. Each family member should be consistent in training Pitbull puppies.

As your dog's attention span increases, more advanced training can begin. When the more advanced training begins, one family member at a time should initiate the training sessions. They should be no more than 10-12 minutes.

How to trim dogs nails

The most important reason for trimming your dog’s nails is because it can be painful for your pet to walk around with such long nails, the nails will eventually curl up and dig into their skin especially the dew claws.  Leaving your dogs nails uncut can lead to infection by the bed of the nail, bleeding as well as broken nails. Another reason why people trim dogs nails is because they don’t want the dog to scratch up their floors and furniture. Not trimming your dogs nails is also a safety issue as your do can easily scratch family members while playing.  This is especially important when you have little kids as they will be spending a lot of time with your pet. `

One important fact to understand is that dogs hate getting their nails trimmed. As an owner of an American Pit Bull Terrier I know it is  not an easy task to trim dogs nails unless he or she is trained at an early age.  Most people are not experienced dog owners and do not know the importance of early puppy care thus not feeling their feet as a baby or getting them used to the clipper along with treats.  By the time your puppy reaches 6 months of age their nails will come into your attention along with their rough play, now trimming becomes a priority.  If your dog is not used to the trimmer by now it is very difficult to hold him or her by yourself, you will need another person to hold the dog while you get the work done. You also have to be careful not to cut too much of the dogs nails during their first time, you do not want to scare them, just clip the tips off for now.  Nail trimming is easier on a dog with light colored nails as you just cut the white part off and don’t cut close to the pink. Dark colored nail tips however are for the experienced, as you do not know how much to cut off as a beginner, in this case just cut the tips off till you and the dog gets more comfortable with it. If you accidentally cut too much of the nail be sure to have a styptic powder in handy this will stop the bleeding, you can find this at Petco.

There are many tools on the market to trim your dogs nails one of the best tools i recommend is the Safari Nail trimmer with safety stop. You can buy it from PetCareRx.

My American Pit Bull terrier hates having her nails trimmed and it is often a hassle for even the professionals at Petco to trim her nails. I paid ten bucks to trim her nails at Petco once and their staff just couldn’t get most of the front nails however they managed to get the hind legs.  From that day on I just let her run around in the concrete floor outside and that seems to do the trick and it slowly files the nails so that it never gets too long or too sharp. In order for this trick to work your dog should have a proper nail cut at least once and then the concrete will take care of the maintenance part. This is indeed a hassle free way of maintaining your canines nails but for those of your who do not have this luxury early puppy familiarization is a must.  Reward your puppy with treats after each nail is clipped and never cut too much of the nail so that they are not scared at the sight of the clipper.  Here is a great video to assist you, Happy clipping!

No shedding dogs

So you love dogs but you are allergic to them, I can safely tell you that you can still have a dog. There are many hypoallergenic purebreds and hybrids of dogs out there. Usually people get no shedding dogs to help keep the allergens down to a minimum. Shed free dogs does not mean that you still cannot develop allergic reactions to them. Allergies can still occur from the dogs skin and saliva.

There are many low shedding breeds that are not listed here but popular ones include the Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Havanese, Portugese water dogs, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Schnauzer, Tibetan Terrier, Toy Poodle, Welsh Terrier and Whippet. These dogs shed very little but may still require grooming or light brushing.

Remember that no shedding does not mean that you may not be allergic to these dogs so it is a good idea to do a trial visit before you make a decision. Count on spending a few hours with them to see if you are experiencing any sort of allergies some reactions are almost immediate. It will be well worth it in the long run if you are that much into finding mans best friend.

From my personal experience, some people may be able to tolerate short haired dogs even if they shed. I know I am allergic to shepherds and not so allergic to short haired dogs such as pit bulls and boxers. Everyone is different and your allergies as well as the severity of it vary from person to person. Always remember that all dogs require some form for maintenance care that comes with the responsibility of owning a pet.

 

Clive Davis, Stevie Wonder, Kevin Costner & Others Line Up To Remember Whitney Houston At Funeral

Music mogul Clive Davis, actor Kevin Costner and singers Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys were among those who gathered to remember the life of tragic superstar Whitney Houston during a private funeral service in her native New Jersey on Saturday.

With flags at half mast across the state, grieving friends and family members shuffled inside the singer's childhood place of worship, the New Hope Baptist Church, in Newark to mourn the loss of the music icon.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, Houston's 18-year-old child with ex-husband Bobby Brown, her cousin Dionne Warwick and mother Cissy were all in attendance and the gospel veteran shared her final message to her daughter inside the funeral's program.

It read, "I never told you that when you were born, the Holy Spirit told me that you would not be with me long. And I thank God for the beautiful flower he allowed me to raise and cherish for 48 years. Rest, my baby girl, in peace."

Houston's on/off boyfriend, R&B singer Ray J, and his sister Brandy were also present for the memorial, while New Edition star Bobby Brown made a brief appearance before leaving just 20 minutes later with two of his children from previous relationships in tow.

In addition to Wonder and Keys, Mariah Carey, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin SparksVivica Fox, Forest Whitaker, director Spike Lee, and talk show host Oprah Winfrey joined mourners at the church to pay their respects.

Soul legend and longtime family friend Aretha Franklin was noticeably absent - the "Respect" hitmaker was forced to pull out as a guest and performer just hours before the event due to health issues.

The touching ceremony opened with a performance by a mass choir singing "The Lord is My Shepherd" as Pastor Joe A. Carter greeted mourners.

Grammy Award-winning gospel singer and minister Donnie McClurkin then sang Houston family favorite "Stand", and filmmaker Tyler Perry stepped up to the podium and told the crowd, "Say whatever you want, God was for her and she is resting, singing with the angels."

Gospel star BeBe Winans fought back tears as he broke into a rendition of "Home", while Bishop T.D. Jakes, who produced Houston's upcoming movie Sparkle, delivered a heartfelt speech and singer Kim Burrell belted out a specially-dedicated cover of Sam Cooke classic "A Change Is Gonna Come" to her late friend, remembering the singer's roots, rise to success, and untimely passing.

Actor Costner broke his silence about Houston's death to express his sadness at the tragic loss of his Bodyguard co-star, stating, "Whitney returns home today to the place where it all began. And I urge us all inside and outside, across the nation and around the world to dry our tears, suspend our sorrow, and perhaps our anger, just long enough to remember the sweet miracle of Whitney."

And he continued, devastated by the idea that their friendship had been cut far too short.

He said, "I was your pretend bodyguard once, not too long ago and now you're gone, too soon, leaving us with memories, memories of a little girl who stepped bravely in front of this church, in front of the ones that loved you first, in front of the ones that loved you best, and loved you the longest. Then bolder you stepped into the white hot light of the world stage, and what you did is the rarest of achievements, you set the bar so high, that professional singers, your own colleagues, they don't want to sing that little country song ("I Will Always Love You"), what would be the point? Now the only ones who sing your song are young girls... who are dreaming of being you one day... So off you go Whitney, off you go."

Costner's moving speech received a standing ovation from mourners.

An emotional Keys then took to the piano to perform "Prelude to a Kiss" and she choked back tears as she said, "I was just thinking about the way that it's so obvious that she just crept into everybody's heart and the way that she was such a beautiful human being. Really, really caring, beautiful, thoughtful, human being."

Longtime mentor and music producer Davis followed and kept his composure as he addressed the attendees: "I can't tell you how moved, touched, inspired I am today by feeling the spirit in this great church and feeling the faith, it's helping me with my grief and my heavy heart... Personally, all I can say is that I loved her, very much. Whitney was purely and simply, one of a kind."

Musical tributes continued with R&B star R. Kelly, who crooned "I Look to You", and Stevie Wonder, who paused to say, "This is such an emotional moment, I just want to stop and give our praise to God for allowing me to be in life at the same time as Whitney."

The ceremony was brought to a close with final goodbyes by the tragic beauty's sister-in-law and former manager Patricia Houston and singer Warwick, as CeCe Winans - Bobbi Kristina's godmother - brought down the house with an uplifting performance of "Don't Cry".

Winans ended the service by leading the church in song as she crooned a portion of Houston's favorite church hymn "Jesus Loves Me" and her brother, Pastor Marvin Winans, delivered a touching eulogy and rousing sermon.

The crowd then rose to stand for the final procession as Houston's casket was carried out of the building to her classic hit "I Will Always Love You". A heartbroken Ray J was seen reaching out to touch the casket as it passed by his church pew and had to be comforted by his sister Brandy as he broke down in tears.

The legend will be laid to rest on Sunday next to her father John Russell Houston, Jr. at the Fairview Cemetery.

Houston was found dead in her hotel room bathtub at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles last Saturday, aged 48. A cause of death has yet to be determined, but Los Angeles police officials have ruled out foul play.

BeBe Winans Still Stunned Over Whitney Houston's Death

Gospel star BeBe Winans was stunned to learn of his friend Whitney Houston's death as he was convinced she was "making it through the storm" of her past drug problems.

The "I Will Always Love You" singer, who had a history of substance abuse, was found unconscious and underwater in a bathtub in her Los Angeles hotel room last Saturday.

An autopsy performed on Sunday proved inconclusive and the cause of death has been deferred pending the results of toxicology tests, although reports suggest alcohol and prescription pills could have played a part in the tragedy.

A week on, Winans is still struggling to come to terms with the singing superstar's sudden death, because Houston was feeling so positive about life.

He tells CNN talk show host Piers Morgan, "I think the shock is great because we walked through, I think a darker valley five, 10 years ago. And so, at this point in time... it was, 'Oh, we're making it through the storm', you know?...

"I lost my brother at the age of 48... Whitney was there at the funeral and everything else. And one of the therapists told me... 'It's just hard for us to wrap our minds and accept lower numbers.'

"We can accept when loved ones die at 75 and 80. But when it's 48, when it's 13, it's just hard to wrap our minds around it because we believe that we're going to grow old together, and we believe with this beautiful lady (Houston) that we would grow old together.

"The reality is now, I have to let go, you know? That reality, she'll live in our hearts... and the fond memories get us through this difficult time. But I have to let go of what we thought we would do."

Winans also reveals that Houston found it hard to accept her stardom, adding: "She tried to run away from it. It's wild to one day wake up and the whole world is chasing you.

"She had just played me 'I Will Always Love You' in the hotel room and I said, 'Whitney, that's going to be incredible, it's going to be huge'. She looked at me and said, 'Oh, I knew it'. I said, 'Why are you sighing? Why are you acting like that?' She said, 'BeBe, because the same people who are applauding me with this, are going to be the same people who are going to throw darts at me'."

 

Bobby Brown Honors Whitney Houston At Post-Funeral Concert

Bobby Brown paid tribute to his ex-wife Whitney Houston on stage at a gig in Connecticut just hours after he walked out of her funeral on Saturday.

The late singer's famous friends and family members gathered at a church in Newark, New Jersey to honor her memory, but Brown was seen leaving the service after just 20 minutes.

He subsequently released a statement blaming his premature departure on seating issues, and he took to the stage with his New Edition bandmates in Connecticut later that evening as planned.

During the show at the Mohegan Sun Arena, Brown took a moment to remember his ex-wife and received a standing ovation from the crowd as he raised a finger to the sky and said, "Blessings to my ex-wife, Whitney Houston. I love you," according to E! Online.

He is due back on stage at the Newark PAC venue in New Jersey on Sunday.

It should be noted that any so called American Pit Bull Terrier with the blue strain, is not an APBT at all. In the real world you are more likely, though rare, to get an APBT will blue eyes before you would a Blue/Grey one. If you were to take a serious look at the history of the dogs, one would notice that the Blue color has only come about in the last 15 or so years. If you browse through the oldest APBT books, one will notice there are many colors but no Grey/Blue. Not to say that it is impossible to come out with a grey ABPT from breeding Reds Strains to Black Strains but the chances are more than ten million to one and to repeat it consistently is impossible and to become a dominant color is absolutely absurd.

The Blue/Grey dog is a Ban Dogs/American Bullies, which consist of Neopolitan Mastiffs, Kane Corso's, American Bulldogs, etc, bred for collar and size which were heavily bread back into APBT's for shape. So if your dog is has these traits then you should call them what they are. American Bullies/Ban Dogs and breed them with those types of dogs. By calling your Blue/Grey dogs APBT's you do a dis-service to APBT's, American Bullies, and your dogs. This is like giving your dog an identity crisis because those that know about APBT's will laugh at your claim, mocking your dog, calling them PetBulls, Bull Shits, etc, instead of Pit Bulls.  Anything Blue or Grey should not be confused with an APBT. If a APBT is what you want then do your research and one. If you don't believe this claim, call a repetual APBT breeder, tell them what you think you have and they will tell you what you actually have. Also a repetual APBT breeder will not have any Blue/Grey dogs in their yard.

Adele Sweeps; Foo Fighters & Kanye West Dominate The Grammys (Full List Of Winners)

Just as predicted, British songstress Adele dominated the 2012 Grammys, from a rousing performance of her hit "Rolling In The Deep" to sweeping all six categories in which she was nominated.

She picked up the pre-ceremony awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Short Form Music Video for "Rolling in the Deep", along with the awards for Record Of The Year ("Rolling in the Deep"), Album Of The Year ("21"), Song Of The Year ("Rolling in the Deep") and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Someone Like You"; but Adele wasn't the only big winner at this year's awards ceremony.

Foo Fighters, Skrillex and Kanye West were already big winners at the Grammys on Sunday night before the ceremony got underway.

Dave Grohl's rock act picked up four awards at a pre-event ceremony, including Best Rock Song for "Walk" and Best Rock Album for "Wasting Light", while West and Skrillex were triple winners.

West landed awards for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song ("All of The Lights") and Best Rap Album ("My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy"), along with a co-award with Jay-Z for their single "Otis" from their collaboration "Watch The Throne.

Electronic star Skrillex picked up trophies for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album ("Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites").

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band got what is sure to be a very emotional Grammy Awards off to rousing start in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The Boss made no mention of the Whitney Houston tragedy that was hanging over the ceremony and raced into a ferocious rendition of new song "We Take Care of Our Own".

Springsteen and his bandmates were joined by a string orchestra onstage at the Staples Center as the rocker belted out the patriotic tune with an angry snarl throughout.

Introducing the song, he growled, "America, are you alive out there?"

Once the stirring performance was over, LL Cool J, the Grammys' first host in seven years, took to the stage.

He took a somber, serious tone as he addressed Houston's passing and said, "There is no way around this; we've had a death in our family, and so at least for me the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman who we loved, for our fallen sister Whitney Houston."

He bowed his head and stated, "Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us. Today our thoughts are with her mother, her daughter and all of her loved ones, and although she is gone too soon we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit and to have her lasting legacy of music to cherish and share forever. Amen."

The rapper/actor then introduced footage of Houston performing "I Will Always Love You" at the Grammy Awards in 1994, adding, "Whitney, we will always love you."

LL then welcomed Brits Adele and Paul McCartney, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Tony Bennett and Carrie Underwood to the Grammys and asked, "Are we all ready for music's biggest night?"

Bruno Mars then kept the party going with another rousing performance as the event's organizers and performers attempted to get past the sadness surrounding Houston's death on the eve of the Grammys.

Highlights of the night included Rihanna's pumped-up rendition of "We Found Love" and Coldplay's struggles with their song "Paradise" - before a huge day-glo backdrop. Off-key and croaky, frontman Chris Martin battled through the song, fighting the bad cold that has prompted the band to scrap upcoming Australian tour dates.

Other major performance highlights included Katy Perry's fiery first TV appearance since her December marriage split, Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney, who was given a standing ovation for his performance of new romantic standard "My Valentine" from his new album "Kisses on the Bottom". McCartney also closed the show with a rocking, guitar-heavy "Abbey Road" medley of "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End" that featured Joe Walsh, Dave Grohl and Springsteen.

The night's most bizarre performance came from Nicki Minaj as she debuted a new alter-ego, called Roman, during a strange performance art piece inspired by horror film The Exorcist. Minaj appeared to levitate as dancers dressed as monks and a man pretending to be a bishop watched on.

The 2012 Grammys will be remembered for its all-star tributes - to Etta James, 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Glen Campbell, the Beach Boys, who kicked off their 50th anniversary celebrations with a rendition of summer anthem Good Vibrations at the ceremony, and Houston, who passed away in a Los Angeles hotel on the eve of music's big night.

During the 'In Memoriam' part of the broadcast that honors the artists the recording industry loses each year Jennifer Hudson knocked out a rousing performance of "I Will Always Love You" in tribute to the late Houston, despite reports that the singer had struggled with emotions during rehearsals.

After Adele was presented with the Grammy for Album of the Year ("21") by none other than Diana Ross, Paul McCartney closed out the show with a classic performance of the Beatles' "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End".

Bobby Brown On Whitney's Death: 'We Will Get Through This Tradegy As A Family'

Whitney Houston's Autopsy Completed 

Bobby Brown has spoken out following his daughter Bobbi Kristina's hospitalization on Sunday, insisting the teenager will pull through her mother Whitney Houston's tragic death with the help of family.

The 18 year old was taken from the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on a stretcher after suffering from anxiety issues a day after Houston was found dead at the same hotel.
Her singer dad cancelled a New Edition gig in Tennessee to be by her side, and he is determined to help Bobbi Kristina "get through" the tragedy.
In a statement to Extra, he says, "Today my daughter did visit with doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She has been released and is presently with my family, including her siblings.
"Obviously the death of her mother is affecting her, however, we will get through this tragedy as a family. Again, I ask for privacy during this time."
Brown and Houston divorced in 2007 after 15 years of marriage. Bobbi Kristina is their only child.

homework before we acted first.
I did the same thing with a German Shepherd female. She was sorta a rescue situation.  She was the prettiest thing I had seen in a
while. Big bone, nice thick head and gorgeous coat and condition.  Just knew she had to have some really nice breeding behind her.
Took her home, promised I wouldn't part with her.  Order a pedigree and not one name had any title, health clearance, or kennel
name beside some BYBer's name.  It really didn't matter because we didn't plan on breeding her. However, it was a shock to find out
she had a fruit salad of a pedigree. I know that is very different from your situation. But was just sharing how easy it is to be fooled
by looks.

Dog Coughs and Reverse Sneeze

There are many reasons a dog or puppy may be sneezing some of them less serious than others. The good news is that there is always a treatment and even prevention through some vaccines. If you have a puppy be sure to have all of his or her vaccinations done by 6 months of age.
If you have a new puppy he or she may have kennel cough and needs immediate vetinary care. Kennel cough is contagious and may be caused by the canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus, canine parainfluenza virus and respitory coronavirus or other bacterial reasons. If proper care isn’t given there is a possibility that it can turn into pneumonia. Symptoms of kennel cough include dry cough, hacking cough, snorting and gagging and usually occurs after the dog is excited.

The cause of this cough involves bronchitis that may be caused by the heartworm infestation. The cough will also occur because of fluids that are accumulated in the dogs heart due to the heartworms.
Another reason the dog coughs is because of seasonal allergies. Just like us humans dogs are also prone to many allergens.
All about Reverse Sneeze…
Reverse sneezing is another popular term coined for allergic coughs. It occurs because of a sinus irritation but the exact cause is unknown. Reverse sneezing is not harmful to dogs and they are fine after the episode. My American Pit Bull Terrier often gets reverse sneezing especially in the morning after a long sleep. Dogs with brachycephalic skulls are more prone to reverse sneezing, these dog breeds include the American Pit Bull Terrier, Boxer, Bull Mastiff, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Pug and Shar-Pei.

I find that sometimes my little pit bull steals my undergarments. she will walk up to a laundry basket, shuffle through it, until she finds something that belongs to me. Upon finding her desired piece of clothing, she will run away and chew on the fabric. Puppies eating clothing can become a bigger nuisance if you let it slide and they may start chewing up your sofa next. There are several reasons as to why puppies/dogs pilfer clothing from their families.

Clothing absorbs a person’s scent, making this quite desirable for a canine. Usually, you will find a dog rummage through dirty laundry, but they don’t attempt to make away with clothing while it is being worn.  They only rummage through dirty laundry, if they are left alone. Puppies eating clothing can be due to  separation anxiety. Puppies pilfer clothing as kind of a coping mechanism for feeling lonely, and they seek out comfort. A lot of the time, puppies can feel estranged if their owners are not always home to give them a little attention. They develop a sort of separation anxiety, and they need to be reminded of their owner/family member. It is important to always pay attention to your pet, you don’t want them to grow apart from you.

It is more common that puppies become attached to clothing, rather than full grown dogs. At a young age, puppies require comfort, and motherly sort of feeling. when they are separated from their mothers, some people acquire sheets of clothing that contain the mother’s scent and place it by the puppy to help with the detachment. The piece of clothing is again a comforting mechanism for the little one.

It is not a good idea to get your puppies used to stealing your laundry. Yes it is cute sometimes, but by  allowing the puppy to eat one piece of clothing, you are reassuring him/her that it is okay to steal laundry.  If you are leaving your home for a long period of time, it is okay to give your puppy one of your old shirts. However, when you come back, you should take it back, so the puppy does not feel ownership towards the shirt.

If your puppy thrives in pilfering your clothing,  you have to set him/her  straight. Do not provide soft and chewable toys to your puppy. This will just widen their vision for clothing. Allow them to chew on these toys under supervision only. Keep your dirty laundry away from your puppy, it’s better for you and your puppy in the long run!

Leash training any puppy is a difficult process let alone a Pit Bull. You have to be patient for tying the collar and leash and making your pet to get used to it.

Leash training a Pit Bull puppy can be a frustrating task. Your puppy certainly does not want to be pulled or pushed towards traffic or other dogs. Moreover, on your part, do not think that simply pulling the leash is what you need to do. You need to know some leash manners to ensure the safety of your pet while walking.

After tying the leash, when you think that your pet is comfortable, you need to pick up the leash-end and follow your pet inside the house. You can also move around the areas where your puppy is comfortable. Remember, that this is the training period so it is better that you stay inside your house or a comfortable area and do not apply pressure to the collar or else the puppy will get scared. Keep praising your puppy and provide reward in regular intervals. This will help your pet to become comfortable with the leash in the way of playing and gradually you will be able to take it outside the house and move around comfortably with perfect control.

To make Leash training any puppy easier attach a collar on him or her starting at 8 weeks old and slowly adjust it as they grow into it. This method will allow them to get used to having something on their neck and it makes leash training a whole lot easier. You should also pull on the collar now and then so they will get used to having a leash pull on it later on. Notice the string on my baby girls neck below, leash training her was a piece of cake.

Raising a Pitbull Puppy with a Newborn Baby

Puppies are very needy. So are newborns. My main concern for you is that you will feel stretched too thinly among all the demands that will be made on your time.

Probably the chief complaint of parents of newborns is fatigue due to lack of sleep. So, it's not the best time to deal with an energetic puppy that needs plenty of exercise, attention and frequent bathroom breaks.

However, if you're determined to do this, realize that you have your work cut out for you if you're going to have a manageable situation in your household. Ideally, you'd want your puppy to be house trained by the time the baby arrives (which may or may not happen despite your best efforts).

Get an early start on teaching some basic obedience commands using positive reinforcement. By the time your baby arrives, you want your puppy to at least be able to sit and stay on command.

As far as socialization goes, it's important to expose your puppy to as many people and different situations as possible--especially during the 10 - 14 week window when puppies are most impressionable. BUT and this is important, never sacrifice quality of contact for quantity. You want the puppy's experience around people--particularly children--to be 100% positive. That means that contact with children needs to be carefully controlled and closely supervised.

You'll want to plan ahead for the day that you bring your baby home from the hospital. Here's an article with some additional tips about introducing a dog to a newborn.

I wouldn't take a 4 week old puppy away from its mother and litter mates unless there was no choice. Puppies aren't really ready to begin the weaning process until about 3 - 5 weeks of age. And ideally it would be a gradual transition from mother's milk to formula to soft food to solids.

Rushing the weaning process can cause digestive, nutritional and immune problems. So please, contact your vet to find out exactly what you should be feeding your puppy at his stage of development.

Puppies also learn social skills during their time with mom and sibs--things like bite inhibition and how to play with peers. Cutting this time short can make training more of a challenge and can give rise to behavioral issues that you will then need to address as they become apparent.

That said, we all know that sometimes puppies are orphaned or end up in a shelter at a very early age and they still turn out to be wonderful companions. The thing is, whenever it's an option, puppies should stay with the litter long enough to be fully weaned AND to learn those important elementary social skills.

I know that many breeders push puppies out the door (for economic reasons) at six weeks. But, eight weeks is really more optimal.

Do your part to help ensure these types of operations can't make a business for themselves by not buying from them.

If it is important to you that you get your dog with papers dictating its lineage and authenticity that meets a certain level of breeding standards you should see a reputable breeder.

A good way to find a reputable dog breeder is through the American Kennel Club. Any breeder found through the AKC would be a reliable one. If a local breeder is important try asking your local veterinarian for a well known and trusted breeder. Be careful hunting out a breeder on the internet as many could be dishonest and even falsify papers and are sometimes hardly better than a puppy mill.

Pitbull Rescue Organization - The Best Way To Go:

The American Pitbull Terrier is one of the most abused and abandoned dog breeds there are. Thousands are put down by pounds and rescue organizations every year despite tremendous rescue efforts. If paper work is not particularly important to you as it never has been to me a rescue organization is by far the best and most humane route to take.
